Malayalee Cultural Association of Calgary

The Malayalee Cultural Association of Calgary (M.C.A.C.) has grown considerably from it's humble beginnings over three decades ago. Formed originally as the Calgary branch of the Alberta Malayalee Association, it today is an independent association of Malayalees in Calgary with a membership of over five hundred families and a very active annual calendar of events.

The two main objectives of the association are to:

  • Provide a forum for friendly social activities among the Malayalee community in Calgary.

  • Impart a good understanding of our heritage, culture and traditions to the youth of our community.

Silver Jubilee

2011 is a landmark year for the association as this is our Silver Jubilee year. The 2011 Executive committee requests cooperation, participation and blessings from each and everyone in our wonderful community as we celebrate 25 years of our presence in Alberta

Youth Participation

One of the great successes of the association is the active participation of youth in the committee as well as the programming. This by itself meets one of the main objectives of the association - to impart a good understanding of our cultural heritage to the youth, especially second generation Malayalee-Canadians.

Cultural Programs

We have three main annual events to showcase the talent of our members:

  • Kerala Night - Normally held in May. Is an evening of stage performances: traditional dances, skits, and visual presentations.

  • Onam Celebration - Normally held in August/September. One of the main highlights of this program, apart from cultural programs is an elaborate 'Onasadya' in the traditional Kerala style.

  • Christmas - The grand finale to our activities of the year. Another occasion to showcase the talents of our members.

Other Programs and Gatherings

We have a number of other initiatives this year in addition to the Annual Picnic held every year, such as

  • Social Evenings

  • Malayalam Movies

  • Musical Programs

Calgary: Heart of the New West

Calgary, with its sea of skyscrapers, is a vibrant modern city and is one of the fastest growing cities in North America. With the eastern face of the Rockies as its backdrop, nowadays, the concrete and steel skyline of Calgary stands out in stark relief from the plains, but just over a century ago, the place was merely a 'Mountie' post at the junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers.

Now, Alberta's center for corporate offices, the city is continually evolving and recent construction has resulted in a somewhat space-age network of enclosed walkways, 15 feet above street level, that keeps shoppers warm in the winter. The city has an endless amount of entertainment from shopping, theatre, galleries, a symphony orchestra, ballet and concerts to a dazzling nightlife and its own professional football and hockey teams. Rodeo, of course, is a word synonymous with Calgary and every July the Calgary stampede attracts millions of visitors. Alberta State offers a vast range of outdoor and adventure activities. In spring, for example, you can ski in the mountains and play golf in the warm valleys, all on the same day.
